Learnerships
A Learnership Programme has been developed with the objective of creating a pool of suitably qualified artisans from the communities
surrounding our operating sites. At Lichtenburg, the programme builds on the long-standing relationship with the Bodibe community in the area around the Tswana Lime Quarry. The basis of the programme is:
A three year contract to study one of the priority trades, which currently means studying to become a millwright or an electrician.
• Spending six months of each year at the Africa Training Centre and six months gaining practical on the job experience in the plant.
• Provision of a monthly allowance together with personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing, plus a tool box.
• In 2006, four female learners and five males, between the ages of 22 and 25 from the Bodibe community were awarded learnerships. The
minimum entry requirement for this programme is Grade 12 level mathematics and science. In 2007 a further 16 learners, including four women, were selected for the programme.
Training our Youth
Lafarge Gypsum has teamed up with the CIDA Campus as an important education partner of MACC, the aim of which is to educate students to a world-class standard in the building sciences and all aspects of construction. Lafarge Gypsum sponsored the training
for the first intake of students through its courses at the recently launched Training Centre in Roodekop.
The intensive MACC one-year, in-service learning course also includes physically building a classroom block and dormitories to expand the facilities at the CIDA Campus. Students showing appropriate aptitude will be able to obtain business skills by furthering their studies to achieve a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree.
Lafarge Gypsum and other industry partners will be
closely involved with the students, providing courses
on their own sites and experts to run workshops.
